2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic Rankings, Course Preview, Player Field and Targets from Each Range

Jul 1, 2020

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is going to be the first tournament back to reality. It won’t be packed with the elite talent we’ve seen in the first three tournaments back from the pandemic. The field will feature 154 players with only 3 players in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). These players include Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, and Bryson Dechambeau. Reed and Dechambeau haven’t missed a tournament since we started back and should be in full form. Simpson is making his return from the week off after winning the RBC Heritage. Hideki Matsuyama is making his second start after the pandemic and is looking to bounce back from his missed cut in the RBC Heritage.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic replaced the Quicken Loans in 2019. It is a Par-72 7,334 yard bent grass course. In 2019 the course played very easy, and Nate Lashley absolutely dominated everyone, winning by 6 strokes posting a score of -25. Officials have said they grew the grass in the rough out to make it a little more difficult, but I don’t see that making a huge difference. Last year proved how important putting proved to be at this tournament, with everyone that finished in the top 20 gained strokes putting. SG: APP will always be an important stat in every golf tournament so go after the guys that have the best irons and can get hot with the putter.

The conditions at Detroit Golf Club look to be great this week. Temperatures to be in the 80s and low 90s with winds between 5-10 mph. Looks like there could be some clouds going into the weekend, but looks like the rain will hold off until Monday. These conditions could change, but as of now looks like it will be a nice weekend of golf.

webb simpson 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Webb Simpson

Webb Simpson took the week off last week after finding out a family member had COVID. The last time we saw Webb he was winning at the RBC Heritage after getting “super hot” on the back 9 on Sunday with his putter. This is another course that just seems like a Webb Simpson course! Keep it in the short grass off the tee, have strong irons and get hot with the putter. Webb has momentum and look for him to build on that momentum again this week at the Detroit Golf Club.

Other Targets From This Range

Patrick Reed : $ 10,500, Bryson Dechambeau: $11,700, Tyrrell Hatton: $10,700, Hideki Matsuyama: $10,200

$9,000 Range

sungjae im 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Sungjae Im

Other than Sungjae’s T-10 finish at the Charles Schwab, it’s been a bit of a slow start back from the pandemic. He missed the cut at the RBC Heritage and finished 58th last week at the Travelers. In those two tournaments he lost strokes on approach and putting, which is something we’re not accustomed to seeing with Sungjae. Look for him to dial in his irons this week in Detroit and give himself some better looks at birdie. Sungjae was playing some of his best golf before the break and we see him getting back into that form this week. According to Fantasy National, over the last 50 rounds Sungjae rates out 7th in strokes gained total, 7th in strokes gained tee to green, 9th in ball striking, 5th in strokes gained off the tee, 25th in strokes gained approach, and 27th in putting.

Other Targets From This Range

Tony Finau : $ 9,300, Scottie Scheffler : $9,000, Rickie Fowler: $9,500

$8,000 Range

doc redman 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Doc Redman

Doc Redman has come out of the gates scorching hot! He’s leading the field in strokes gained approach since the pandemic. According to fantasy National over the last 12 rounds he ranks sd4th in ball striking, 6th in strokes gained tee to green, 18th in strokes gained off the tee and 19th in strokes gained total. If he can knock down some putts this week or just put it inside 10 feet every approach shot like he’s been doing he’s a legit contender to win this tournament. You don’t want to miss out on the week Redman decides to get hot with the putter and this seems like the perfect time to do it. He finished second here last year, and we are expecting another strong outing this year.

Other Targets From This Range

J.T. Poston : $8,700, Rory Sabbatini : $8,800, Adam Hadwin : $8,200, Erik Van Rooyen : $8,000

$7,000 Range

brandt snedeker 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Brandt Snedeker

Brandt Snedeker is one of the best putters on tour and when his irons are on, he can shoot extremely low. Detroit Golf Club is a course Brandt should really like and we see him doing really well here. When his putter gets hot it really sparks the rest of his game so if he can get the flat stick working early, we could see him at the top early on and watch him stay up there through Sunday. Snedeker finished T-5th here last year, and we think he could find that same success here this year.

Other Targets From This Range

Brian Harman : $7,900, Maverick McNeally: $7,600, Sebastian Munoz : $7,100, Harold Varner III : $7,600, Mark Hubbard : $7,200, Brian Stuard : $7,400

$6,000 Range

cameron tringale 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Cameron Tringale

Cameron Tringale had a rough first tournament back from his long break. He had some “blow up” holes and we think a lot of this was because of being out of competition for so long. Tringale is a very consistent player and always seems to be underpriced for what he’s capable of doing. According to Fantasy National, over the last 50 rounds he ranks 16th in strokes gained approach, 16th in strokes gained tee to green, 25th in ball striking, and 54th in putting. Tringale has never won on tour but is a cut making machine. He’s a second shot golfer who’s “lights out” with an iron in his hands and it’s only a matter of time before he gets his first win! Detroit Golf Club is a great fit for Tringale finishing T-5th here a year ago. He’s another guy that if he can get hot with the putter, he has the ability to sneak into the top of the leaderboard again.

Other Targets From This Range

Nate Lashley : $6,600, Harry Higgs : $6,800, Sepp Straka : $6,700, Matthew Wolff : $6,800, Lanto Griffin : $6,800, Sam Burns : $6,900
